Course overview
This micro-credential is made up of three stand-alone 20 hr courses/modules. Modules can be completed in-person or online, and you have the flexibility to choose the length of time you take between the 3 modules.
You will be introduced to the Māori language with a focus on office communication and gain an understanding of Māori cultural concepts and protocols as they relate to the workplace. You will gain a richer knowledge of tikanga Māori and gain confidence to extend your sentence structures, vocabulary, and phrases to integrate into every day and work life, in both formal and informal settings.
This micro-credential is partially funded. To meet the requirements for funding participants must be a NZ citizen or permanent resident.
What you'll learn
- Pronounce te reo Māori accurately and confidently in workplace and everyday contexts.
- Use appropriate greetings, acknowledgements, farewells, and cultural protocols in both formal and informal settings.
- Introduce yourself through a personalised mihimihi or pepeha and confidently present it in meetings, events, and professional environments.
- Build and apply an expanding vocabulary, including whakataukī (proverbs), to enhance communication and cultural understanding.
- Hold conversations in te reo Māori using a range of sentence structures to ask and answer questions effectively.
- Deliver karakia and participate appropriately in culturally responsive workplace practices.
- Communicate confidently about whānau, mahi, and other familiar topics using both spoken and written te reo Māori.
- Construct and present short kōrero using formal and informal language structures appropriate to different audiences and situations.
Course modules
1. Te Kaupeka – Workplace Te Reo Māori 1 (10 x 2hr sessions)
- Pronounce Māori words correctly and with confidence
- Greet, acknowledge and farewell people in both informal and formal settings
- Introduce yourself with a simple mihimihi/pepeha that can be used at meetings, work events or for personal use
- Understand Māori cultural concepts as they influence the workplace
2. Te Tauteka – Workplace Te Reo Māori 2 (10 x 2hr sessions)
- Acquire a new vocabulary and learn whakataukī (proverbs).
- Increase your confidence in using te reo Māori.
- Hold a short conversation in all settings and be able to ask and answer questions using descriptive, possessive, locative, and active sentences.
- Confidently present your mihimihi and a short presentation on your whānau (family) or mahi (work) using a variety of sentence structures.
- Karakia to open and close meetings.
3. Te Kōpāpā – Workplace Te Reo Māori 3 (10 x 2hr sessions)
- Increase confidence in your oral and spoken language proficiencies.
- Confidently discuss and write about a range of topics in te reo Māori.
- Utilise formal and informal structures.
- Construct a short kōrero tuari (presentation) on a selected topic using vocabulary and sentence structures learned in the course.

Workload and Assessment
This micro-credential involves 100 hours in total. 60 hours are face-to-face learning with a kaiako and 40 hours of self-directed learning.
There are three formal assessments for the micro-credential which will be moderated and graded by the kaiako (teacher) with a pass/fail grade:
- Develop and deliver with confidence an individual mihimihi with correct pronunciation.
- Develop and deliver a kauhau (speech) demonstrating a range of sentence structures in te reo equivalent up to 300 words.
- Present a kōrero on a topic of your choice utilising formal and informal grammatical sentence structures in te reo Māori.
All assessment requirements must be passed to earn credit.

What You'll Receive
This course is a university-approved micro-credential worth 10 NZQA Level 5 credits, assessed to meet academic and industry standards. Upon successful completion, you will receive:
- A digital badge
- A digital certificate
- Academic credit recorded on your official Victoria University of Wellington academic transcript
All credentials include the total CPD/PLD hours completed.
These digital credentials are portable, verifiable, and designed to support both your current role and long-term career advancement.

Private course
Te Rou can be delivered privately in an organisations’ workplace and customised to your timetable, with a minimum of 2-hour teaching blocks required. You can order a private in-house course delivery, please contact the Poutaki Māori directly marie.cocker@vuw.ac.nz
What is a micro-credential?
A micro-credential is a formal credential that acknowledges specific skills and knowledge gained through learning programme or activity. These credentials are assessed and meet industry standards, allowing you to demonstrate mastery in particular areas.
Our micro-credentials carry University credit at defined level (eg undergraduate or postgraduate) and credit may be used towards further learning. Micro-credentials are designed to be stackable, creating a pathway to further qualifications or career advancement.
