Course overview
In this introductory course, you will learn basic Māori language skills with a focus on office communication and gain an understanding of Māori cultural concepts and protocols as they relate to the workplace.
This interactive course is delivered through two-hour sessions held weekly over ten weeks either in-person or online.

What you'll learn
- Pronounce Māori words correctly and with confidence
- Greet, acknowledge and farewell people in both informal and formal settings
- Introduce yourself with a simple mihimihi/pepeha that can be used at meetings, work events or for personal use
- Understand Māori cultural concepts as they influence the workplace
Course modules
Participants will cover the following topics over ten sessions:
- Whakahua kupu – pronunciation
- Whakawhanaunga – introductions, greetings, and farewells
- Whānau – family and relationships
- Tūrangawaewae – a place to stand
- Te reo parāoa – everday conversations
- Rerekaute me te maramataka Māori – counting sentences and maramataka
- Tikanga tari – office customs
- Tikanga – customs
- Whakaharatau – practice
- Aromatawai – pepeha/mihimihi presentation

Further Information
Format
This course is delivered over 10 weeks, either at a Wellington venue or online. It includes a mix of facilitator-led sessions, small-group exercises, and whole-group discussion. Group size is limited to 16 participants to ensure meaningful interaction and personal feedback.
What You'll Receive
You will receive a digital certificate of attendance and a Wellington Uni-Professional digital badge. These include the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours completed, making them suitable for recognition by professional organisations and employers.
