Course overview
Quantitative data analysis helps organisations answer the questions they rely on data to answer—from how many and what proportion, to what is typical, how results differ between groups, and what can be predicted. AI can now accelerate much of this work but getting useful and reliable answers still depends on knowing which questions are worth asking, choosing appropriate analysis and checking whether the results make sense.
Using a real dataset in Excel, participants work through practical exercises to conduct quantitative analysis directly and explore how AI tools can support the process. This one-day, hands-on course is designed for professionals who work with data and need to analyse or interpret quantitative information for decision-making. Participants develop the confidence to choose appropriate approaches, check AI-generated analysis and interpret what the results can—and cannot—tell them, leaving with practical skills and new insights from data.
What you'll learn

- Build and interpret a simple regression model to understand what it can—and cannot—tell you.
- Spot when AI has applied the wrong test, misread data or produced a misleading result.
- Check AI-generated analysis using your own methods and determine when its output can be trusted.
- Identify which questions and results are worth acting on to focus analysis on what matters for decision-making.
Course modules
Setting the Foundations: What AI Does Well, What Needs You
Explore what data and analytics can—and cannot—answer, and how different types of data shape the analysis that is valid. Learn where AI can reliably speed up quantitative analysis and where its output needs close checking.
Hands-On Practice: Guided Exercises
Work through a real dataset in Excel to answer common organisational questions: “how many”, “what proportion”, “what’s typical” and how results differ between groups. Use Excel techniques and AI tools side by side, checking one against the other to build confidence in the results.
Beyond the Basics: Complexities, Edge Cases & Takeaways
Build and interpret simple predictive models and explore what the results do—and do not—tell you. Practise spotting common AI analytical errors and consider how to apply the skills, techniques and judgement developed during the workshop to analysis in your own organisation.

Format
This course is delivered as a full-day in-person workshop at our Wellington venue. It includes a mix of facilitator-led sessions, small-group exercises, and whole-group discussion. Group size is limited to 16 participants to ensure meaningful interaction and personal feedback. Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea are provided to support networking and collaboration.
Participants will have the opportunity to work on examples, including those related to their own work (if they so choose). To complete the exercises, you will need to bring a laptop that has access to an AI tool that allows you to upload and download documents. As long as you can do that, it doesn’t matter which tool you use. It would be helpful, though not absolutely essential, for you to also have access to Excel on your laptop. Group size is limited to 16 participants to ensure meaningful interaction and personal feedback.
