Course overview
Data only creates value when people understand it, believe it and act on it. Effective data communication requires more than polished presentations, reports or dashboards—it requires a clear understanding of the audience, the message and what matters to them.
This one-day, hands-on workshop takes participants through the full process of creating effective data communication, from understanding the audience and designing the message to building high-quality visuals and evaluating impact. Participants explore how AI tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Claude and Gemini can accelerate the process and check their work, while applying human judgement to ensure communications remain accurate, relevant and engaging.
The workshop is designed for professionals who collect, analyse or communicate data and need to turn insights into communications that inform decision-making and drive action. Participants can work with their own data and leave with practical skills and a completed data communication.
What you'll learn
- Identify your audience’s knowledge, needs and communication preferences to tailor your data communication effectively.
- Define the objective of a data communication and frame the “job” it needs to do.
- Identify genuinely interesting findings and structure them into a clear, compelling narrative.
- Choose appropriate chart types and apply visualisation principles for colour, order, labelling and metrics.
- Use AI to draft and edit data communications while knowing when to check and challenge its suggestions.
- Recognise the limitations of AI and apply human judgement about your audience, organisation and objectives.
- Evaluate the impact of a data communication and refine it based on feedback and results.
Course modules
Setting the Foundations: What AI Does Well, What Needs You
Explore how to understand your audience and define the objective of a data communication before getting started. Learn where AI can accelerate drafting and design, and where it is likely to miss important context without human input.
Hands-On Practice: Guided Exercises
Work with a sample data communication to put the principles into practice. Use AI tools to help draft text and prototype visualisations, then apply storytelling and data visualisation principles to refine and strengthen the communication.
Beyond the Basics: Complexities, Edge Cases & Takeaways
Explore the challenges of communicating data to mixed or difficult audiences and consider how to evaluate whether a communication has achieved its intended impact. Reflect on how the techniques and approaches can be applied to upcoming data communications.
Further Information
Format
This course is delivered as a full-day in-person workshop at our Wellington venue. It includes a mix of facilitator-led sessions, small-group exercises, and whole-group discussion. Group size is limited to 16 participants to ensure meaningful interaction and personal feedback. Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea are provided to support networking and collaboration.
Participants will have the opportunity to work on examples, including those related to their own work (if they so choose). To complete the exercises, you will need to bring a laptop that has access to an AI tool that allows you to upload and download documents. As long as you can do that, it doesn’t matter which tool you use. It would be helpful, though not absolutely essential, for you to also have access to Excel on your laptop. Group size is limited to 16 participants to ensure meaningful interaction and personal feedback.
What You'll Receive
You will receive a digital certificate of attendance and a Wellington Uni-Professional digital badge. These include the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours completed, making them suitable for recognition by professional organisations and employers.
