Course overview

Learn how to design contemporary regulations that work in practice by applying analytical frameworks, models, and tools that can address inherent trade-offs in regulatory systems. This course teaches you to think like a regulatory strategist, balancing competing interests and designing policies that can adapt to evolving circumstances. It is a hands-on course employing case studies from transport, construction, or financial markets regulation.

Taught on campus in an accessible block format designed for working professionals,  the course is appropriate for anyone in the public sector— your workplace experience is an asset, not a barrier. Credits earned count towards a postgraduate qualification at Victoria University of Wellington.

  1. Apply foundational regulatory concepts and frameworks to analyse policy problems and design solutions across various public-sector settings.
  2. Critically examine current regulatory practice developments through theoretical and practitioner lenses, incorporating national and international perspectives.

Further Information

This course is optimised for face-to-face delivery on campus attendance. As required, lectures can be accessed via synchronous (live-stream) Zoom. Optional tutorials may be scheduled. There are no assessments requiring in-person attendance.

This is a credit-bearing course and does include assessment items. Assessment is designed to be at the right level for your learning and aligned to your work practice. Assessment items for this course are:

 

  1. Short essay: foundational concepts – 20%
  2. Short essay: Regulatory innovation – 20%
  3. Short essay: Impact assessment – 20%
  4. Regulatory analysis – 40%

By passing this course, you will receive 15 points that can be transferred into other Post-graduate programmes within the Te Herenga Waka | Victoria University of Wellington School of Business and Government. 

You will also receive a digital badge that will allow you to share your learning with your professional networks, and enhave your CV. 

This course is also equivalent to 150 hours/points of CPD.

The fee for this course includes the Student Services Levy (SSL.)
