Course overview
Qualitative data can reveal insights that structured data cannot, but analysing large volumes of open-ended text has traditionally been slow and difficult to do consistently. AI can now code and categorise qualitative data quickly and at scale, but human judgement remains essential to ensure the results are meaningful, accurate and relevant.
This one-day, hands-on course uses a real dataset to build a practical workflow from raw text through to coded, validated and summarised results. Participants use AI tools to accelerate coding and categorisation, while applying their own judgement to define useful categories, validate the results and account for ambiguity, sarcasm and context. The course is designed for professionals who work with survey comments, reviews, interview transcripts or other open-ended feedback. Participants leave with a practical approach to analysing qualitative data and insights they can trust and act on.
What you'll learn
- Compare AI-based and traditional qualitative coding to determine when AI is the better approach.
- Develop category and theme structures by defining them yourself or using AI to derive them from the data.
- Write effective prompts to produce consistent and well-defined coding schemes.
- Code open-ended text at scale using AI tools to categorise large volumes of qualitative data efficiently.
- Validate AI-generated coding by checking reliability and cross-referencing results across different AI tools.
- Identify content AI is likely to misinterpret including sarcasm, ambiguity, and cultural or domain-specific language.
- Combine coded qualitative data with quantitative data using pivot tables to reference, summarise and explore findings.
- Apply human judgement appropriately by recognising where AI can be trusted and where human oversight remains essential.
Course Modules
Setting the Foundations: What AI Does Well, What Needs You
Explore the goals and traditional process of qualitative analysis, what AI coding tools can now do, and where they still fall short. Learn how to integrate AI into the analysis process while maintaining the quality, consistency and relevance of the results.
Hands-On Practice: Guided Exercises
Work with a real dataset, either provided or participants’ own, to develop categories and code responses using AI tools. Check the reliability of AI-generated coding through comparison with other AI models or manual review, then summarise the coded results.
Beyond the Basics: Complexities, Edge Cases & Takeaways
Explore trickier situations including sarcasm, ambiguity, and culturally or domain-specific content, as well as the challenges of maintaining consistent coding at scale over time. Troubleshoot real data challenges and develop a practical plan for applying the approach within the organisation.

Format
This course is delivered as a full-day in-person workshop at our Wellington venue. It includes a mix of facilitator-led sessions, small-group exercises, and whole-group discussion. Group size is limited to 16 participants to ensure meaningful interaction and personal feedback. Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea are provided to support networking and collaboration.
Participants will have the opportunity to work on examples, including those related to their own work (if they so choose). To complete the exercises, you will need to bring a laptop that has access to an AI tool that allows you to upload and download documents. As long as you can do that, it doesn’t matter which tool you use. It would be helpful, though not absolutely essential, for you to also have access to Excel on your laptop. Group size is limited to 16 participants to ensure meaningful interaction and personal feedback.
