Course overview

This practical one-day workshop introduces the core principles and tools of effective project management. Designed for those new to managing projects or supporting project teams, the course demystifies the project management process and equips participants with essential tools and techniques.

Through a mix of expert facilitation and real-world examples, participants will explore project planning, risk management, communication strategies, and stakeholder engagement.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have a solid understanding of the project life cycle, key terminology, and practical techniques they can apply immediately to improve project outcomes.

1. Scope Definition and Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
Learn how to clearly define project scope to avoid misunderstandings and scope creep. Use a Work Breakdown Structure to break down deliverables into manageable tasks.

2. Cost and Time Estimating Techniques
Explore key methods for estimating project costs and duration. Understand how to balance accuracy with flexibility in the early stages of project planning.

3. Preparing a Project Schedule
Gain practical tools for sequencing tasks, identifying dependencies, and building a realistic schedule. Learn how to use simple scheduling techniques to keep projects on track.

4. Project Risk Management
Identify potential risks and assess their impact. Apply practical tools to manage uncertainty and develop mitigation strategies that keep projects moving forward.

5. Stakeholder and Communications Management
Understand how to map and engage stakeholders effectively. Learn how to plan communications that support collaboration, reduce resistance, and improve project outcomes.

6. Team Development
Explore the dynamics of working within project teams. Learn strategies to clarify roles, build trust, and support team performance across the life of a project.

Further Information

This course is delivered as a full-day in-person workshop at our Wellington venue. It includes a mix of facilitator-led sessions, small-group exercises, and whole-group discussion. Group size is limited to 16 participants to ensure meaningful interaction and personal feedback. Morning tea, lunch, and afternoon tea are provided to support networking and collaboration.

You will receive a digital certificate of attendance and a Wellington Uni-Professional digital badge. These include the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours completed, making them suitable for recognition by professional organisations and employers.
