Course overview
This course is designed to build on the foundational knowledge acquired in the Foundations of Unconscious Bias course, supporting participants to develop a deep and comprehensive understanding of the complexity of unconscious biases, its manifestation, and its management. Delivered as a 3-hour online synchronous session, the course is targeted at individuals who have completed the introductory course and want to further enhance their knowledge and skills in recognising, mitigating, and responding to bias. Through lectures, small group discussions and simulations, participants will work to develop individualised action plans aimed at addressing specific issues of bias within their work and/or personal lives.

- Explore different types of bias and examine the social and psychological influences and consequences of these different forms of bias.
- Learn strategies for managing and mitigating unconscious bias in leadership and decision-making when working with diverse groups of people.
- Learn how to develop action plans that can be implemented to mitigate distinct forms of unconscious bias.
- Define a variety of different types of bias and understand how cognitive processes shape the production of biases reasoning.
- Describe techniques for managing and mitigating different types of unconscious bias and addressing microaggressions across various contexts.
- Understand the deep, systemic impacts of unconscious bias and reflect on common mitigation strategies within personal and professional settings.
- Develop and propose actions to address real-world issues of unconscious bias.

- Stages of legislation
- Policy products:
- Understand your context as a policy professional.
- The different purposes of advice and products.
- Tell the Minister something.
- Help the Minister make a decision.
- Support a decision maker to do something.
- Help with government accountability.
- Collect information.
- Communicate a message or direction.
Afternoon
Bringing it all together: A real life example to practice what’s needed for taking an issue to Cabinet and oral parliamentary questions.
