Course overview

Synthesising large volumes of qualitative data—such as open-ended survey responses, written or verbal submissions contributed as part of consultation processes, comments on social media sites and reviews on websites —can be overwhelming and time-consuming. This hands-on course shows how modern AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can simplify and speed up the process using software already at your fingertips.

Delivered as a practical workshop, participants will learn a step-by-step method for qualitative data analysis through a series of guided exercises. Those who bring their own data can complete a real analysis during the session.

This course is ideal for anyone needing to extract meaningful insights from written feedback but in particular professionals in roles such as policy, communications, and marketing. Participants will walk away with a clear method for using AI in their analysis, saving time while improving rigour and consistency—no prior AI experience required.

  • Apply AI tools to identify underlying themes and insights that may not be immediately visible.
  • Use AI to summarise and structure qualitative findings into usable, reference-ready formats.
  • Export and format analysis results in ways that support integration with quantitative data.
  • Build confidence using AI tools without needing technical or programming expertise.
  • Enhance your ability to analyse large volumes of text with greater speed and consistency.

Modules

Summarising Qualitative Data

Begin with a practical introduction to qualitative data types and learn how to prompt AI tools to generate useful summaries of open-text responses.

Using AI Tools for Coding Qualitative Data

Explore how AI can assist in coding qualitative data by grouping similar responses. Participants will practise generating and refining coding structures that suit their specific analysis goals.

Using AI Tools to Identify Themes

Go beyond surface-level coding to uncover deeper patterns and themes. Learn techniques for prompting AI to reveal insights that may not be immediately visible and assess the validity of the outputs.

Using Coded Qualitative Data

Learn how to use coded data to produce structured outputs that can inform reporting, reference documents, and even quantitative analysis.

Further Information

This course is run as a highly interactive four-hour course during which participants will analyse qualitative data. To complete the exercises, you will need to bring a laptop that has access to an AI tool that allows you to upload and download documents. As long as you can do that, it doesn’t matter which tool you use. Group size is limited to 16 participants to ensure meaningful interaction and personal feedback.

You will receive a digital certificate of attendance and a Wellington Uni-Professional digital badge. These include the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) hours completed, making them suitable for recognition by professional organisations and employers.
