Rodney Barber

Rodney Barber is a social entrepreneur, business owner, and public investment expert. He believes that better outcomes stem from better decisions, which inspired him to create Better Decisions. Better Outcomes™ (BDBO). This initiative is designed to help public leaders collaborate and think strategically about how to deliver better outcomes for greater public value.

From 2009 to 2016, Rodney worked at NZ Treasury, where he established the Better Business Cases Framework to guide decision-making on public initiatives. He also led national capability development for the public sector, setting up training, communities of practice, clinics, and coaching programs.

After leaving Treasury in 2016, Rodney developed the BDBO Framework to help organisations identify the right initiatives for achieving their vision. His work has included coaching a district and several public sector agencies on maximising their internal capability for investment decision-making that delivers the best public value.

In 2017, Rodney trained and coached the government of a foreign country, building confidence in decision-making and identifying the right initiatives to support their vision. In 2020, he began advising the government of a Southern African country through a contract with the International Monetary Fund to improve decision-making processes.

Locally, in his suburb of Newlands, Rodney has applied aspects of the BDBO framework to engage with local leaders in setting a vision for 2030, focusing on building community wellbeing and resilience, while also identifying and measuring outcomes to achieve that vision.
