Kāpuhipuhi Wellington Uni-Professional launches unique
micro-credential to support the professional development of mathematics teachers

The beginning of Term 3 has been a busy time for Wellington Uni-Professional (WUP) with the launch of Supporting Student Success in Mathematics Learning to support mathematics professional development. This is a new 5 point micro-credential suitable for anyone who is currently, or in preparation to teach mathematics to students from Year 4 to 10. It is also for lead teachers of mathematics who want to support their own work and that of their teams.

The course is timely given the spotlight on international testing comparisons. As a result there is concern for our New Zealand students to gain better results in this curriculum area. We have developed this micro-credential in partnership with Adjunct Professor Robin Averill, PhD student and lecturer Sarah Howell, and Te Whānau O Ako Pai.

We have designed to run online across eight weeks and to support teachers to:

  • learn powerful mathematics strategies related to the teaching of decimals, fractions and percentages, and
  • support students to understand, use and enjoy mathematical ideas.

Participants explore and use evidence-based ways to move away from misunderstandings and misconceptions and meet the diverse learning needs of their students.
