Strengthening Leadership for a Stronger New Zealand Red Cross

New Zealand Red Cross is a humanitarian organisation delivering core community services and emergency management operations across the country.
The Challenge
Following a major change programme, New Zealand Red Cross created several new Director roles with significant leadership responsibilities across the organisation. With a unique opportunity to bring this group together to build a supportive and collaborative group, the organisation sought a training programme that would not only develop individual leadership skills but also foster a “whole of organisation” approach.
Objectives
The goal was to create a tailored professional development programme that matched the diverse skills and experience of the new Directors. New Zealand Red Cross required a range of sessions to build the core competencies and capabilities the leadership team needed to collaborate effectively and lead.
The Solution
After an initial positive learning experience with a general leadership course from Kāpuhipuhi Wellington Uni-Professional, New Zealand Red Cross worked closely with Programme Manager, Anika Maddalena, to design a customised training programme. Running over nine months, the programme combined tailored content with self-reflection and development opportunities. A key element of success was having a dedicated contact person to coordinate the programme and provide ongoing support.
The Impact
The Directors formed a strong, supportive group, sharing insights and experiences that enriched their leadership approach. This collaborative development fostered both individual and collective growth, creating a stronger leadership team. As a result, New Zealand Red Cross is better positioned to work together effectively and deliver on its mission.
